LH Torana SL/R 5000
In March 1974 Holden created a four-door sedan, the mid-sized LH model. The 5.0 Litre or 308 Cubic Inch V8 engine was reserved for the sports oriented SL/R 5000 version of the LH.
The L34 Option
A "Bathurst killer" was built from the SL/R 5000 called the 'L34 Option'. Only 263 L34's were ever built starting in late 1974 and continuing through 1975. With engines modified for the race track by Repco and revamped running gear and upgraded brakes the L34 was a genuine muscle car from the outset. In its first attempt at the Mt. Panorama circuit in 1974 the car finished with a 2nd and 3rd placing and by 1975 was 'the weapon of choice' of many of the top racing teams.
Bathurst 1975
1975 was a time when classes dominated the races and prize money with the large capacity V8's relegated to class D there was even talk of scrapping the larger cars in 1976 and limiting engine capacity to 3.0 Litres. The race started with Colin Bond in an L34 gaining pole position with Alan Moffat also on the front of the grid only 1/10th of a second behind. The Falcons all retired from the race with a variety of malfunctions and Bond with partner John Walker finishing third behind the L34 of Bob Morris and Frank Gardner in second. Finishing two laps ahead was the L34 of Peter Brock and Brian Sampson.
